The South Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel has today (18 September 2014) appointed Steve Pick, the Chief Finance Officer of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner as Acting PCC to manage the transition period between now and the forthcoming by-election which will take place on 30 October this year.
Commenting on his appointment, Steve Pick said:
“I have a firm and relatively straightforward view of the main task to be carried out by an Acting (unelected) Commissioner in the circumstances currently facing South Yorkshire.
I believe that the people of South Yorkshire will elect as their next PCC, the candidate who they believe, regardless of background, is best able to address the very significant challenges ahead, not least those arising from the very distressing revelations of recent weeks.
“In the meantime, preparations need to be made so that the newly elected Commissioner can begin to address public concerns and restore public confidence as quickly as possible.
In the very short period of time before the by-election, the Acting Commissioner and her/his staff working together with other agencies, primarily South Yorkshire Police, need to prepare to present the newly elected Commissioner a comprehensive briefing on those challenges.
“This will of course include listening closely to the various statements made by candidates regarding their aims and objectives, in order that such briefing can be appropriately tailored to any publicly made commitments given by the successful candidate.”
