PCC Praises SYP for Bank Holiday Presence

AlanBillingsWindow

Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, has commended South Yorkshire Police for the way they have responded to the increased demands placed on them as a result of last week’s attack in Manchester.

“I would like to thank South Yorkshire Police on behalf of the public for the way they have responded to the extraordinary demands made on them over this bank holiday weekend.

“They have kept us safe at multiple venues and events, at times in sweltering conditions. Their presence in unprecedented numbers has been noticed and greatly appreciated.

“It is not easy to gauge when the deployment of armed officers reassures and when it frightens people, but this weekend I think South Yorkshire Police had the balance exactly right. The officers themselves - including some from Cumbria that I met outside the City Hall in Sheffield - were unfailingly cheerful and good humoured while remaining focussed on the job in hand.

“I particularly thank Assistant Constable David Hartley who has been gold commander over this period. It has been seamlessly managed.

“Last week I wrote to my opposite number in Manchester, the Deputy Mayor with responsibility for policing, Beverley Hughes, to say that South Yorkshire Police and public were united in offering whatever support they needed at this difficult time for them.”
